As the countdown to Durga Puja commences, artisans in Bengaluru are adding final touches to the intricate decorations and idols that will adorn the pandals across the city. With the festival just a few weeks away, a vibrant and busy atmosphere fills the workshops of these skilled craftsmen located in Jayamahal, Cox Town, Maruti Seva Nagar, and other areas of the city.
The trend currently involves a combination of traditional techniques passed down through generations and modern designs to create stunning masterpieces. The artistry that brings Durga Puja to life includes intricate details, vivid colors, and symbolic representations. Artisan Chandrashekhar Pal mentioned that theme-based idols and modern designs, sometimes incorporating clothing into the clay designs, are gaining popularity in the city. The idols vary in size from 6 to 15 feet high, with a growing demand for larger ones.
While it is disheartening when their hard work goes unnoticed, artisans find satisfaction in knowing that their art is used for religious purposes. They also express gratitude for being able to earn income for themselves and their teams. One artisan shared that the celebrations are becoming grander, and the demand for idols has significantly increased. Another artisan, who has been creating idols for Durga Puja in Bengaluru for the past 35 years, mentioned that the demand has risen, with him now producing at least 60 idols compared to four or five in the past. The influx of more Bengalis to the city has contributed to this heightened demand. Additionally, the artisan noted that while Karnataka also celebrates Dussehra with similar rituals, the notable difference is that Bengalis specifically observe Durga Puja beginning on Panchami.
